About Chester

Who Is Chester Macdonald?

A little about me.I was born number of 5 of 6 children and raised on a mixed farm operation just an hour north of Adelaide at Marable. When I was 5 years old we moved to Adelaide for schooling where I then discovered my love for rowing. From here I followed in my brothers footsteps into National Representation, winning numerous titles including the ‘Kings Cup Australian eight oared Championship’ in 1981 and 1982 of which at that stage South Australia had not won the coveted title since 1937! I finally gave up my oars in 1994 after I won The World Masters Open Pair Title with my brother, along with 6 Victorian (including a State record) and 8 South Australian titles.

Towards the end of my high school years, a friend’s father introduced me into the idea of pursuing a career in financial services. I took to it like a rowing boat to water and won numerous awards whilst obtaining an Advanced Diploma of Financial Planning to become a Certified Financial Planner.

The lure of the clean country air finally managed to draw me away from the city bustle, finally settling in Rockhampton in 1996 with RetireInvest.

After 12 years as senior advisor, along with countless presentations at both national and international conferences, I left to form Harvard Wealth.

In these years I have learned to balance my career with my passion for vintage collectables of which I store on my hobby farm, health and fitness and above all-raising my 4 beautiful children.

I’m passionate about life and gain a great deal of satisfaction from helping people achieve financial contentment, a greater sense of peace of mind and gaining a financial sense of direction.

Q&A With Chester

Q. What do you consider constitutes good advice?

A.  The organisation of your financial strategy so that you achieve the best you can. Ensuring the structuring of your borrowings with the future in mind, building wealth, and putting in place adequate protection strategies.  Then, with vision, planning for the transition to a contented retirement.

Q. When choosing an adviser what attributes do you believe gare important selection criteria?

A. If the adviser asks a lot of questions then you’re onto a winner as they need to understand ‘you’ and how you think, not just the typical financial questions.

Every adviser has to have a certain financial intelligence by law, but the seldom-challenged area is the emotional mindset, which can be a yet far more determinant area for financial success.

If you leave the meeting with 2 or more options on what to do with your finances then you know the plans are being tailored to your needs and you can make informed decisions working with your adviser.

There is a big difference between this and the ‘meet once, receive a Statement of Advice, try and understand it and implement it’ alone.

Your advisor should help you to consider all options available

Things to consider are a whether they are interested in you gaining further financial knowledge; are you given further reading to brush up your own knowledge on those options so you can ask the right questions upon your next appointment?

The right adviser will also prompt you and challenge your understanding.

Are you then given a plan on how to implement those changes and also on how to review them further in the future?

What the process of advice is, can you involve other professionals or family members?

What are your priorities compared to their priorities?

Where do you see yourself in 5 and 10 years, can your advisor show you this?

What is your advisors attitude towards your goals? The ideal is to find someone who you can relate to and work alongside with to address your goals and financial needs.
